What fluids does my car use and what do they do?

Modern vehicles use a variety of different fluids in order to operate their numerous systems. As the miles rack up on the odometer the fluids in these systems will begin to break down and/or collect contaminants. This means that they will no longer be able to do their jobs properly. This is why it is important to keep up with routine auto maintenance, which includes conducting fluid flushes. A fluid flush is just the process of draining the existing fluid and replacing it with fresh fluids. In some cases a filter may be replaced as well, depending on your make and model. The following are four of the most common fluids that require flushes on toy's import and domestic cars and trucks.

Engine Oil

The fluid that needs to be changed the most often is the engine oil. Engine oil provides the necessary lubrication to prevent the moving parts of the engine from rubbing against each other while the car is operating. Dirty oil and a clogged oil filter can prevent the proper flow of oil which will result in massive internal wear and tear.

Transmission Fluid

The transmission uses fluid for a few different reasons. Transmission fluid acts as a lubricant for the moving engine parts and in some cases it also provides the hydraulic power necessary to shift the gears in an automatic transmission. Most vehicles need a transmission flush every 30,000 miles.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid is necessary to make steering your vehicle easy. The system uses hydraulic pressure to to turn the wheels, making it easier to control your car. Dirty power steering fluid could damage the power steering pump and other components of the system so be sure to never skip this service.

Coolant/Antifreeze

Coolant, also known as antifreeze, it what flows through your vehicle's cooling system. Low levels of coolant or dirty coolant could result in your vehicle overheating. Always be sure your car has sufficient levels before long distance travel.
